About Chamberbrook

A New Catalyst to transform from the inside out

Our mission

The Chamberbrook Business & Arts District of Northside RVA is a grassroots effort by longtime Richmond residents, community organizers, and designers. Since 2018, we've engaged international entrepreneurs, artists, business owners, and any and all neighbors in conversations about how to build our community.

The history

A Past Look through postcards

These are a few images of a series of postcards that were published for the various tourist homes that lined Chamberlayne Avenue during the 1930s and 1940s. During the  Great Depression, some homeowners turned their houses into guest lodges  catering to the travelers along US Route 1.

Ironically, the second postcard is the Richmond Motel, 2600 Chamberlayne Avenue – an establishment that most likely put the tourist homes out of business.

The back of the third postcard reads: "'The Sign of a Good Night's Rest', 2912 Chamberlayne Ave. Richmond, VA (Just 4 minutes from Business section). Rooms bright, well ventilated with outside exposure. Beds equipped with luxurious innerspring mattresses. Hot and cold baths - tubs and showers. Ample parking space. Rates reasonable. Telephone, wire or write for reservations. Mrs. M.D. Pleasants, Telephone 4-3297, On U.S. Route 1."

THE CHALLENGE

This community has a rich and beautiful history, but now the perception is that it is less of a place to live, work, and play. This corridor is more than a place to just drive through. Although the neighborhood is safe, it has become known for prostitution and crime. The Northside needs a catalyst, it needs its reputation restored.

The Vision

Northside is marvelous. Its eclectic mixture of architectural styles and mature trees make it, at times, a picturesque view into a time long past. It is composed of a number of different neighborhoods, each with their own character and allure. These neighborhoods have taken shape within a gridded street layout set in order by the former streetcar system. The streets are wide with even wider setbacks, forming large front yards facing the street. The majority of the trees are mature and frame perspectives with lush greenery and shade. The roots of this particular set of communities are strong, but there is a need for re-invigoration.
